About the Service

Connect97 provides off-campus Internet access through a dial-in connection for students, faculty and staff of Washington and Lee University. This service is intended to be used in conjunction with one's studies or employment at W&L. It is not intended to match or compete with the services offered by regular Internet Services Providers (ISPs).

If your needs exceed the restrictions stated below, you should purchase service with an ISP.

Restrictions on the Service

In order to preserve access to this service for the entire user community, the University has placed several restrictions on the use of the service.

  1. Access to the service is for employees and students only and may not be shared with others, including family.

  2. Each user is allowed to connect to the service for 90 minutes per day over the course of a month. Automatic timers will disconnect without warning any session exceeding this limit. In addition, inactivity timers set to 5 minutes will also disconnect idle sessions.

Note: Composing or editing a message or file looks to the network like inactivity and may trigger disconnection. You should compose longer messages and edit documents off-line to avoid the problem.

  3. Users who exceed the amount of allocated time will be warned via email and may have their access privileges suspended if they continue to exceed these limitations. You can check your Connect97 usage by submitting your email address in the form at the top of this page.

If your needs exceed these restrictions, you should purchase service with an ISP. A list of providers is available here.

Using the Service

To begin using the service, configure a dial-up connection using your Novell username and password and dial this number:

(540) 462-2881

Complete instructions for setting up Connect97 on a Windows XP computer are here.

Note: Because direct network access is available campus wide with the completion of the fraternity wireless project, the on-campus number for accessing Connect97 is no longer available. Learn more about our wireless service.
