Configuring Your Windows XP Computer for Connect 97
General information and
restrictions
- Go to the Start
menu. Click on "Control Panel". Double-click
on "Network Connections". In the left menu, click on "Create a New Connection".
Click "Next".
- Check "Connect to the Internet" and click "Next".
- Check "Set up my connection manually" and click "Next".
- Check "Connect using a dial up modem" and click "Next".
- Type in a name
for the connection (Connect97) and click "Next".
- Enter
the phone number: 462-2881.
- Enter your username and password. Uncheck
all other fields. Click "Next".
- Check "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" and then
click on "Finish".
- Go
back to the "Network Connections" window and right-click on the connect
you've just made. Choose "Properties" from the menu.
- In
the "Networking" tab, make sure that only "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" is
checked, along with the other default options.
Remember that you
have 90 minutes of usage for Connect97 per 24 hour period.
There are several local access numbers in Lexington for internet
service providers. The helpdesk will be happy to refer you to one
of those vendors should you need longer access to the internet.
To connect to Connect97 with a modem at a hotel
- Find out from the front desk whether the phone line will allow for
a modem, Some digital lines will destroy the modem.
- Start the computer
- Open the modem card on the left hand side of
the computer
connect the phone wire to the jack on the modem
- Open the
Connection to WLU icon on the desktop
- Type in your username
and password.
- In the number panel either leave or delete
the 9 depending on the requirements of the Hotel.
- At
this point you should have the following string in the
number panel (9),18008498000,,,(your account
number)15404622881
- Select connect.
- If given a Novell Password prompt select Cancel
- If asked, enter the
password at the windows password prompt.
To connect with an Ethernet Port at a hotel
- Plug in the Ethernet Cable to the Ethernet card and identified Ethernet
Port (not a phone jack).
- Start the computer.
- If given a Novell Password prompt select Cancel
To get your email through the Internet
- Open your Internet Explorer
- In the Address bar type in groupwise.wlu.edu
- Select a GroupWise
Web Access Server
- Type in your username and password.
